Why did they kill him? It’s because of what he was saying. He was inciting violence with his rhetoric. When you speak like he did you shouldn’t be surprised when your attacked. Speaking violently begets violence.
Funny, I hear stupid things said all the time by people who claim to know better, and I haven’t got violent with them. I’ve been angered. I’ve been enraged. But I’ve never acted in the way that the murderous coward did in the unlawful killing of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA. A young married man whose children will now grow up fatherless because of the true hatred expressed by a certain sector of our society.
Now I’m not foolish enough to assume that all liberals would and do act in this way when their worldview is challenged and shattered by logical truths; irrefutable truths. The reason is rather simple, “not all progressives follow their worldview to its necessary conclusion.” This is likewise true of those on the conservative side of life. There are some who are downright nasty, and will justify the unlawful killing of others under the sanctity of war. Not all wars are justified, just as not all killings are justified. Not all liberals are murderous bags of trash, and not all conservative are warmongering idiots. On both sides of the aisle there are morons. There are those who lack self-control. There are those that have alternative agendas and they will go to any means necessary to satisfy those ideological convictions even the taking of human life.
I was saddened by the news of Charlie’s murder. I hope and pray that his murderer is brought to justice. That the death penalty is enacted upon those involved; be they one or many. I yearn for justice to be carried out for the surviving victims, his wife and two little children. A widow who has lost her loved one because of hateful bigots. Little one’s who lost their daddy, their father figure, because of the rotten dregs of society.
Charlie Kirk professed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. I pray that he now rejoices in the presence of He who was pierced for our transgressions; by whose stripes we were (are) healed (Isa. 53:5). The truth is that those who trust in the God of Scripture are not dead, for God is not the God of the dead but the living ( Matt. 22:31-32).
Freedom of speech is a God-given right. Governments cannot grant it. But the Creator has. No man has the right to bind the conscience of another. But we all have the right—the responsibility—to speak the truth regardless of the opposition. It is not at all surprising (though admittedly sad) that Charlie Kirk was assassinated. For our Lord was likewise killed for speaking the truth and doing good (cf. John 8:37-48; John 10.23-39).
And the death of the righteous is often found on those grounds. Stephen was killed for speaking the truth. In response to what they heard the Jews stopped their ears and shut their eyes and drove him out of the city and stoned him (Acts 7:57-58). This was a common practice throughout Biblical history as the writer of Hebrews attests:
“…and others were tortured, not accepting their release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection; and others experienced mockings and scourgings, yes, also chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were put to death with the sword; they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated (men of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground” (Heb. 11:35b-39; NASB)
Charlie Kirk wasn’t a perfect man, but he was a good man. He was a sinner like the rest of us, but he confessed his trust in Christ, and was in some measure a defender of the Christian faith. He spoke publicly about issues that others are too cowardly to address. He invited others to express their opinions, and encouraged debate. Ignorant people don’t like that. They don’t know how to handle the free exchange of ideas, and the defense of those ideas shared in the public sector. Charlie gave them an opportunity to speak freely. Those who sought his death wanted to silence him. But if he is in Christ, his blood still speaks. The life is in the blood, and the blood of Christ guarantees the life of those whose faith is in Him.
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die” (John 11:25-26a).
Let us remember Charlie Kirk and pray for his family, and pray to God the righteous Judge that his attacker(s) is found and soon ushered into eternity to embrace that which they’ve proved they love death:
“All those who hate Me love death” (Prov. 8:36b)
